Banana Republic, an American clothing and accessories retailer, is owned by the multinational corporation Gap Inc. Established in 1978 by Mel and Patricia Ziegler under the name "Banana Republic Travel & Safari Clothing Company," the brand initially embraced a safari theme. In 1983, Gap acquired the company, rebranding it as simply "Banana Republic" with a more upscale image. Today, Banana Republic boasts over 600 stores located internationally.
